Cal Raleigh hits home run No. 40, passing Ken Griffey Jr. for most Mariners HRs in first 5 MLB seasons

Cal Raleigh hit his 40th home run of the season on Saturday against Los Angeles Angels and broke a Seattle Mariners franchise record in the process. Raleigh's sixth-inning blast off José Fermín was his 133rd career home run, moving him past Ken Griffey Jr. for the most by a Mariners player in his first five MLB seasons. He also became the seventh catcher in MLB history to post a 40-homer season, joining Salvador Perez, Johnny Bench, Javy Lopez, Todd Hundley, Todd Hundley, Roy Campanella and Mike Piazza. It's only July 26, and Raleigh has already set a career high in home runs in 2025. He's also on pace to surpass his career high in RBI, set last year when he knocked in 100 runs. He was batting .255 entering Saturday, another career best, and has even stolen 12 bases. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Griffey and Raleigh are tied together in franchise history as the only Mariners to win the Home Run Derby. The man affectionately known as "Big Dumper" previously passed "The Kid" for the most home runs by a Mariner before the All-Star break, with 36, and is threatening Griffey's franchise record of 56 blasts in a single season. Raleigh's exploits at the plate have given him a two-home run lead over Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtanio for the major-league lead and put him in the MVP conversation with New York Yankees star Aaron Judge, who just hit the IL with a flexor strain. Raleigh has helped propel the Mariners to a second-place spot in the AL West, 4.5 behind the division-leading Houston Astros and in the mix for one of the AL wild cards.

Mariners' Cal Raleigh makes Ken Griffey Jr. admission amid historic season

The post Mariners' Cal Raleigh makes Ken Griffey Jr. admission amid historic season appeared first on ClutchPoints. Seattle Mariners slugger Cal Raleigh has had a season that Mariners fans won't soon forget. Raleigh is hitting home runs at a rapid pace, and causing fans to remember the last franchise player who hit with such power. Raleigh is paying tribute to Mariners great Ken Griffey Jr. Advertisement 'To be mentioned with that name, with somebody who's just iconic, is a legend, is a first-ballot Hall of Famer, I'm just blessed,' Raleigh said, per 'I'm just trying to do the right thing and trying to keep it rolling. If I can try to be like that guy, it's a good guy to look up to.' Raleigh hit two home runs on Friday, in a 6-0 Seattle win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. The win snapped a six-game Pirates winning streak. In that victory, Raleigh tied Griffey for the most home runs by a franchise player before the All-Star break. Griffey and Raleigh both had seasons of 35 homers before the break. Griffey accomplished that feat in 1998, while Raleigh has done it this season. Raleigh leads all of MLB in home runs this season. Cal Raleigh is building a relationship with Ken Griffey Jr. While Griffey hasn't played in Seattle for several years, he still shares a special relationship with the franchise. In fact, Raleigh and Griffey are connected. Raleigh admits that he speaks with the retired MLB star on the phone. Griffey gives advice to the Mariners slugger. Advertisement 'He's pretty much like the face of the franchise, right?' Raleigh said. 'Ken Griffey, Ichiro, Felix. You can throw Randy [Johnson], Alvin Davis, Edgar, Dan up there on the Mount Rushmore of Mariners. I mean, not just the Mariners, but all of baseball, right? That iconic swing. And I think, too, is how many injuries the guy had — so many injuries. If he was healthy, he would have smashed the [all-time] home run record, I think, so it's even more impressive.' The Mariners and Pirates play again on Saturday. Seattle holds a 46-42 record after their win on Friday. Seattle is second in the American League West, behind the Houston Astros. Cal Raleigh's 35th home run puts him in very rare company

The post Cal Raleigh's 35th home run puts him in very rare company appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Seattle Mariners took on the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday, earning a huge 6-0 win. Star catcher Cal Raleigh stole the show yet again after recording his 35th home run of the season. His amazing feat made MLB history, as he is now in rare company alongside the likes of Babe Ruth and Ken Griffey Jr. Advertisement Raleigh's 35th home run came in Seattle's 88th contest of the season. The 28-year-old catcher became just the 14th player in league history to record 35 home runs in 90 games or fewer, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today. Ruth accomplished the same feat three separate times in his career, while Griffey did it twice. 'Cal Raleigh homers again with his 35th HR and makes more history. He is one of 14 players in which a player hit 35 or more HRs in his team's first 90 games. Babe Ruth hit at least 35 HR three times (1921, 1928, 1930). Ken Griffey Jr did it twice (1994, 1998).' The Mariners' star is on an absolute tear this year. He leads the league in home runs and has been the driving force for Seattle's offense. Additionally, Raleigh is maintaining his defensive skills behind the plate, as he's one of the most consistent catchers in the league. He ended Friday's contest with two home runs, three RBIs, and two runs scored. Cal Raleigh was recently named the starting catcher for the American League in the upcoming All-Star Game. This will be his first All-Star Game appearance in his career. He's also going to remain busy throughout the All-Star Week, as the former Golden Glove Winner is going to partake in this year's Home Run Derby. Advertisement All-Star Week officially kicks off on July 15. The Mariners have eight games remaining on the schedule before the break. That gives Cal Raleigh plenty of time to continue his hot season before taking some time off with teammates and players around the league.
